Cindy: Last Island is the commonly used name for the barrier island formerly known as Isle Derniere, a popular summer resort southwest of New Orleans. Wealthy New Orleanians and plantation owners summered with their families on the island south of Dulac, LA to escape the heat and summer illness of the cities. The island was destroyed by a hurricane in August 1856, killing over 200 people. Stripped of vegetation by the storm, and pounded by waves, the island fragmented. Remnants of the once beautiful island now serve as nesting sites for pelicans and other seabirds.
'Last Island' has grown and bloomed reliably in both LA and Central NY.
